Ignoring voters’ needs

In November 2020, virtually 60% of Montana voters stated sure to poll initiative I-190 to have 49.5% of the tax income from the sale of marijuana go to conservation, habitat, state parks and trails, and public lands. Since our State Parks alone have a $25 million backlog of upkeep, I believed that was a superb use of the income.

However as we speak, I learn a really transient abstract of the legislative plan concerning the tax income, and I’m astonished! The Legislature, working intently with Governor Gianforte, has stated that after the primary $6 million goes to drug dependancy remedy, 88% of all income will go into the overall fund. We the voters stated solely 10% was to go to the overall fund.

These drastic modifications are in blatant disregard for the desire of the folks and imply much less for shielding the Final Greatest Place. Consultant Mike Hopkins, R-Missoula, stated projections for tax income of $20 million was an underestimation. He believes it will likely be nearer to $50 million. So why are lawmakers decreasing how a lot goes to conservation? Montana’s outdoor are why all of us dwell right here. We have to protect it!
