Former opioid addict gives back through random acts of kindness


FEASTERVILLE-TREVOSE, Pa. (WPVI) — It took many twists and turns for Megan Cohen to search out the grace she wanted to carry her life again from the brink.

“I have been in over 70 therapy facilities. I have been homeless in numerous states,” she stated.

Cohen says nothing compares to the time she spent homeless on the streets of Kensington, Philadelphia.

“There’s trash all over the place, there’s individuals all over the place, like, I used to be sleeping in deserted buildings,” she stated. “It is so uncontrolled that they cannot actually get any regulation and order on the market. So, it is like a free-for-all.”

Cohen skated by with the lifelong help of her single mom, Jennifer Shablin. In actual fact, it was her mom’s robust resolution that set Megan on a course to restoration.

“Her dependancy was so unhealthy that she needs to be useless,” stated Shablin. “I had two decisions. Both go to her grave or go to her in jail.”

After a while preserving her daughter out of the home, Shablin determined to show her into the native Sheriff. Cohen hung out in jail and restoration applications earlier than going clear in 2019.

Each Thursday night time, family and friends be part of Megan on a visit to Kensington. They distribute meals, jackets, and toiletries along with sweeping the littered streets.

“There’s individuals overtly utilizing medicine. There’s individuals with critical medical points being unattended to,” stated Shane Williams, who turned a volunteer following his personal restoration. “It was stunning to see that a spot like that not too removed from the place I dwell existed.”

Weekly visits will proceed so long as the group continues to help The Grace Undertaking with funds and donations. Cohen hopes that the non-profit will evolve right into a useful resource to help complete households who battle with comparable circumstances.
